Why QR codes fail to scan
Troubleshoot quiet zones, contrast, module size, damage, glare, camera focus, and overly dense payloads.
Scanning failures usually come from the final presentation rather than the underlying URL. Diagnose the image, print, environment, and payload separately instead of regenerating at random.
Start with the source file
Open the downloaded file at normal scale and test it directly. If the source scans but the printed version does not, investigate size, contrast, material, or production changes. If the source fails, verify that the generator received valid input and try a shorter payload.
More payload data produces a denser symbol with smaller modules at the same physical size. Long tracking URLs are therefore harder to print small than short direct URLs.
Inspect the four common physical problems
A missing quiet zone makes it difficult for the scanner to separate the symbol from surrounding artwork. Low contrast reduces the boundary between dark and light modules. Small printing makes individual modules merge. Glare or curvature can hide different areas as the camera moves.
- Place the code on a flat, matte, light background.
- Increase physical size before reducing error correction.
- Move decorative text outside the quiet zone.
- Avoid folds, seams, and highly curved containers.
Use a controlled retest
Retest under bright diffuse light with the phone parallel to the code. Clean the camera lens and let autofocus settle. Then vary only one factor—distance, angle, size, or lighting—at a time. This produces a useful diagnosis instead of an accidental success that cannot be repeated.
