Testing Wi-Fi QR codes on iPhone and Android
A repeatable test plan for Wi-Fi QR compatibility, printing, camera behavior, and common connection failures.
A successful camera scan only proves that the QR image was decoded. A complete test also confirms that the phone interpreted the Wi-Fi fields correctly and joined the intended access point.
Use a clean compatibility test
Start with a phone that has not already saved the network. Otherwise it may connect using stored credentials and hide an error in the QR payload. Forget the network, disable mobile-data assistance if it confuses the result, scan the code, and check the connected SSID in system settings.
Repeat with at least one recent iPhone and one Android device if the code will be used by mixed audiences. Record the device, operating-system version, security mode, and outcome so later router changes can be compared.
- Confirm the displayed network name before accepting the join prompt.
- Verify internet access, not only the Wi-Fi icon.
- Test a printed copy rather than relying only on a monitor.
- Try the intended lighting and scanning distance.
Diagnose connection failures
If the camera recognizes the code but the phone does not offer to join, check the security setting and payload syntax. If the phone offers to join but authentication fails, verify the password and whether the router uses an unsupported enterprise login flow. Captive portals may allow the Wi-Fi association but still require a browser step.
Hidden networks are less reliable because devices need exact security information and may handle the hidden flag differently. Whenever practical, broadcast the guest-network SSID and use ordinary WPA security.
Test the final artwork
Design software can crop the quiet zone, blur edges, or reduce contrast. Export the exact final file, print it at the intended size, and scan from several angles. SVG is preferable when the artwork will be enlarged because its module edges remain sharp.
- Avoid glossy reflections over the QR area.
- Do not place a logo over finder patterns.
- Re-test whenever the password or router configuration changes.
